Olivia Waite is a romance author, practicing feminist, and wide-ranging dilettante.
This book was marvelously clear, even though it was nearly a history of Egyptology as well as a history of Egypt. It breaks down everything I thought I knew about pre-historical Egypt, and rebuilds it on the strength of material evidence rather than Victorian antiquarian speculation. (He mentions the inherent colonialism of both their histories and his own, for maximum bonus points.) A lot isn't explained, but that's because a lot of evidence is missing. Highly recommended.
There's a promised second volume and I want it RIGHT NOW.
